City life alternatively referred to as urban life, was created as part of the Industrial Revolution primarily. With the introduction of machinery, and factories coming up, the capitalists required labor to work for them. It is from here that certain segments of the population, both males and females, those who used to work in agricultural domains started moving to work in these factories. Hence, they left their original hometown and moved to the areas around the factory, creating urban agglomerations.

When this influx increased, there were demands for other facilities. To accommodate those demands, different facilities like – more factories, buildings for them to stay, schools, and other institutions came up. All of these agencies were set up in that specific area and today, that area is called – a city. The people living in these agglomerated areas referred to themselves as – city-bred people, and their life is called – the lavish city life.

Regarding village life, one can refer to those as the areas that were left behind from where people migrated to the urban areas. Since few people were left there, naturally the concerned demands were also less. Therefore, the development levels in these areas did not take place as fast as city life. Life in rural areas remained as calm as ever. What’s more, the lifestyle of people in those areas has not changed much to date. Though situations have changed with time, and so also, the demands of people living in the villages are changing – rest assured, the core of looking at life remains the same in the villages to date.

Talking of the comparison between city life and rural life, here are some basic areas of contrast –

  • The city offers more facilities than the villages! Whether it is the number of opportunities or the style of life that is generally followed – the city offers a wider diversity in every format compared to the villages.
  • Compared to the expenses of city life, the village life is way cheaper. Since in the case of villages, most of the things are grown locally,  therefore the transportation and additional costs are reduced significantly.

The comparison between city life and rural life has been a point of discussion for a long time. For some people city life is the best kind of life that they can enjoy. The facilities that city life offers, are way more than what village life offers. Also, city life offers better education facilities, more job options, and in general better amenities that village life does not, provide. But in contrast, village life is more community-based, and people are concerned about each other, and their well-being.

Here are some of the differences between city life and rural life –

  1. The city life is congested and is packed with buildings and offices. There are big roads, bridges, and flyovers covering the whole city. However, village life offers seemingly open spaces and has fewer transport facilities. Though there are connecting roads, they are small and for shorter paths. Also, there are no flyovers or bridges as such.

2. City life compared to rural life is more polluted. Since factories and vehicles emit a lot of dust, and smoke, therefore, the overall pollution levels increase. Villages or rural areas do not have many factories so there is no chance of a high pollution rate.

3. When talking about the standard of life, the one in the city is of higher standard vis-a-vis that of the village. Whether it is the healthcare, the academic systems, or the general quality of living – city life is better. Compared to these facilities, the options for healthcare and education (especially higher education opportunities) are few in the villages.

4. Another point of difference between city life and rural life is – the places of entertainment that both these areas offer. While city life has cinemas, theatres, malls, and cafeterias to offer, places of entertainment in the villages are quite limited to local markets and occasional fairs.

5. Lastly – the cities offer individualistic living. People are more concerned with themselves, and their regular lives. But in villages, the setup is more community-based. Everyone is in touch with their neighbors and helps each other out constantly.

However, situations are changing considerably over time, and the government of every country is taking measures to develop the villages, and reduce the excessive dependency on the cities.

When talking about city life and rural life, their benefits and differences, and how one is better than the other – people must remember that each of these places has their own set of benefits.

Here is a table showing the contrast between city life and rural life –

CITY LIFE  RURAL LIFE
Big skyscrapers, tall buildings, less greenery and open space  Fewer buildings, mostly open space and packed with greenery
Has numerous hospitals, schools, colleges, job opportunities  A limited number of hospitals, schools, colleges, and job opportunities
People are rich and have a lavish lifestyle mostly  People living in villages have a simple lifestyle
More pollution from factories  Less pollution levels, since there are no factories as such
Has many malls, cafeterias, theatres, museums, and parks  Occasional fancy local markets, fairs, and festivity gatherings
Expensive to live  Cheaper to live
Diversity in population  Uniformity in population
Higher crime rate  Lower crime rate
Better transport facilities and connections with the whole country through – rail, roads, subways, air Less transport facilities and connections. Only connected to the nearby major city
Faster life in general  Slower life with ample solitude
Individualistic and materialistic approach  Close-knit community format

Though these are the basic differences, the governments of different countries have been considering things and they are working towards the betterment of people. Multiple facilities and schemes have come up for the village people and the problems of the city people are also being looked into. With time, the differences will surely become much less.
